The largest share of electricity produced in Norway comes from hydropower. In 2022, hydroelectricity accounted for 88.2 percent of electricity output in the Nordic country. Wind power contributed another 10 percent to Norway's electricity mix. Hydro electricity production in Norway amounted to roughly 128.7 terawatt-hours in 2022.

Hydropower plants in Norway

   As of March 2023, there were almost 1,770 hydro power stations in Norway. Most of these were small or medium-small sized. The most common size was medium-small plants, with production capacity ranging from one to 10 megawatts. Meanwhile, there were less than 100 plants with a capacity above 100 megawatts. 

Energy companies in Norway

   There are several large energy companies in Norway, such as the fully state-owned Statkraft, the aluminum and renewable energy company Norsk Hydro, and Agder Energi. The largest energy company in the country, in terms of revenue, is Norsk Hydro, with revenue of around 150 billion Norwegian kroner in 2021 (roughly 17 billion U.S. dollars, based on December 31, 2021 exchange rates).
